Ata Rangi, meaning ‘dawn sky, new beginning’ is owned and managed by a family trio – Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. In 1980 Clive planted the bare, stony, home paddock at the edge of Martinborough, becoming one of a handful of people who pioneered grape growing in the area.
A very classic Pinot Gris which has developed from an Alsatian to a uniquely Martinborough style over the years. From a vineyard over 20 years old, the roots of the old vines drive metres deep into the gravels and consistently deliver fruit with great texture.
On the palate: The aromas of this Pinot Gris are reminiscent of peach, grapefruit, Granny Smith apples and notes of hazelnuts.
On the nose: The palate is creamy, with flavours of fresh apricot and savoury notes. On the long finish, the wine shows complexity and will develop with bottle age.
Food pairing: Rich seafood dishes, Portuguese custard tart
Cheese pairing: Munster
Producer: Ata Rangi
Grape: Pinot Gris
